19 of Medvedev's 21 victories have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his initial championship for 882 days with a win over opponent Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has endured a torrid year, managing just one match at the Grand Slams and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

His varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with former mentor Cervara.

Presently training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the past month - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

This represents the player's first championship following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from that period of that year.

Victory also signifies he has won 21 victories at 21 different competitions.

"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my both daughters together, so to win a championship is particularly special," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the first title I won when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, comprising in that event previously this season.

The player's defensive approach and frequent reactions on the playing surface had caused observers to doubt if his ability to compete at the elite level was over.

However the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the concluding five games to take the lead.

The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial tour victory, gained dominance to create a third set.

Moutet defended 4 initial chances in a tight final set before the champion won the break to fifteen to close out the victory.

Fittingly, Medvedev earned the title with a rally at the net, with the Frenchman unable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
