Tropical Storm the storm is forecast to strengthen into a uncommon Category 5 cyclone as it turns in the direction of the Caribbean island, delivering deadly flash flooding and mudslides.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Advisories of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been announced as the hurricane generates up to 76cm of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," inhabitants have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th named storm in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which usually concludes in November.

Highest-Level Hurricane Danger

A Category 5 hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 157mph.

Although Melissa is expected to weaken to a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall on the island, authorities said there was "minimal real distinction in the total effects" upon reaching the coast, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it hits the island.

With tropical storm-strength gusts and precipitation already expected well before it crosses Jamaica's central region - including potentially the city of Kingston - warnings state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"A multi-day period of harmful winds and torrential rain has started and will cause devastating and dangerous rapid water accumulation and multiple rock slides," counseled meteorological officials.

The country's head of government the statesman commented: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are extremely apprehensive, and appropriately: worry is natural.

"Yet the optimal approach to handle worry and any nervousness and concern is to remain prepared."

Residents are being instructed to secure their homes with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to gather essentials.

Regional Impact

Alerts are also in effect for areas in Haiti encompassing the primary urban center, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides already being caused by the cyclone have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

The hurricane is forecast to pass over the island nation by the middle of the week before traveling via the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic.

By the point it makes contact with Cuba, it is predicted to have diminished to a category three cyclone.
