No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
