Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative said: "We will be making no comment on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports film to date.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three races left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
